Art Experience

My first impression of Andy Warhol’s painting of the Campbell’s Soup II was that it was a typical can of soup with New England flavored clam chowder mixed in it. The first thought that went through my head was “are you serious? Do people really consider this art?” I was not impressed at all. I do not think of this as a piece of art. My reason for believing this is that honestly to me this is just a drawing or screen print of a can of Campbell’s New England clam chowder flavored soup. Personally, if someone shows enough talent to draw a can of soup just like this display they should get paid too because they are basically doing the same thing. This was my first assumption of exactly how I felt when I first took a close look at this painting. After closely evaluating and researching Andy Warhol I noticed that he has some very valuable art displays. I also found out that his New England clam chowder soup editions are limited to only 250 prints. He is a very well known artist as I came to find out as I asked some of my tutors and learning specialists. One of his most well known quotes are “What's great about this country is that America started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. You can be watching TV and see Coca Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coca Cola; Liz Taylor drinks Coca Cola, and just think, you can drink Coca Cola, too. A coke is a coke and no amount of money can get you a better coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the cokes are the same and all the cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it.” My response to this is he is absolutely right. Everyone that drinks coke is drinking the exact same thing no matter if you are rich or poor, tall or short, fat or skinny. I have now been informed that this artist is one of the most famous and productive artist of our time, possibly in history. Personally, this is not my preference of art work, but being that there are only 250 editions of this particular print it makes them more expensive.

Creative Spiritual Reflection

1. How do you define “spirituality”?

Spirituality is a very strong word. To me this means being close and having a good relationship with god. Spirituality is used in all cultures, but not always the same way. Spirituality is one of the most personal and withheld things about any person. Faith is a big part of spirituality because you have to have in your spirituality in order to be true to it. All in all my definition of spirituality is, the only way you can find it is if you dig deep within yourself and figure out what is inside your heart.

2. Does spirituality differ from religion?

As a matter of fact spirituality does differ from religion. Religion is made up by man and can be found all over the world. Anyone can start a religion and get people to follow them and believe what they believe as long as they are persuasive. Spirituality comes from within and doing a lot of soul searching. Spirituality and religion are two really important things in society today and I think everyone should pursue one or the other at some in their life.

3. How do you define “creativity”?

Anybody can be creative it all just depends on how you want to do it. Creativity is a word a lot of people use to describe people such as artist, music, and even sports. Creativity can relate to spirituality because they both come from within your mind, body, and soul. I think any and everyone is creative in some way but it is their decision to bring it out or not. Overall, almost everything in the world has something to do with creativity.

4. What is the source of creativity?

The source of creativity comes from within your soul. Creativity is a very common word used in society today. For instance, my source of creativity comes from my heart. A lot of artist and musicians would also say their source of creativity comes from their heart. Some people borrow ideas from other people that they admire and use them to create new ideas and that is another source of creativity. So there are many sources of creativity if you sit and think about it.

The Movie Friday The 13th is all about a boy who witnesses his mother get beheaded by a camp counselor, sounds bad but his mother was on a killing rampage, and 30 years later Jason continues his mothers work by killing campers off in a disgusting and horrible way. Friday the 13th is not just a movie but a famous day for those who are very superstitious and believe that on Friday the 13th, bad luck is bound to happen. Why do people enjoy watching Jason chase these helpless and innocent people around camp when they did nothing to him and want nothing to do with him? The answer is simple, as the article says “ Jason was designed as a leaner and a fast killer, with a back story that could provide a little sympathy for the character but not enough that he would lose his menace”(Friday the 13th 2009 film, Wikipedia). He is this mutated person who was made fun of as a kid by previous people that attended Camp Crystal Lake, so he decides to take revenge on those who come near him because of his memories along with his sick and twisted mind. There are lots of people who are made fun of and don’t go put on a mask and decide to go on a killing spree, then there are those who because of their lack of mental stability or just lack of a soul do decide to take their anger out on innocent people because at the end of the day it makes them feel better about their past and what they went through, there are now people who have been tortured worse then he has.

Have you ever seen the movie “The Silence Of The Lambs”? Just the name of it can give someone chills but yet we still watch it and get scared out of our minds every time. It is those parts where Lector will look at his victims as if they were a piece of meat, literally. It is almost as if you could look right through to his soul but keep on going because there is nothing but a dark hole where his soul should be. Like the quote in the reading, The horror of everyday Life, the usual ways of understanding psychotic killers is “ anger, social acceptance, sexual frustration”(The Horror Of Everyday Life Pg.9) This is all very obvious when it comes to this movie, no one in their right mind would keep women alive for five days, then kill and skin them. There is some obvious anger and sexual frustration going on there because he only captures women, not men. When it comes to social acceptance, there basically is none and that is why these people turn out so weird, its like revenge to society in their minds, they cant fit in or don’t want to because they are sick in the mind so they do the opposite which is to kill and torture innocent people, or in this case women, one by one. There will always be movies like this one that come out and there will always be people that will stand in line to see these movies because they love the thrill and excitement mixed with the fear of the unknown.

I put my personal beliefs and values in wearing Nike because Addidas, or Reebok or any other companies of that sort are not our school or sports sponsor and we get these things for free so why not wear them? I personally believe if people are going to give you things for free then why not be appreciative and wear them especially if they are one of the most popular name brands in the world. One of the reasons I wear sports clothes or attire is because I play sports and I hope continue to play sports throughout my life, hopefully professional sports. I made the choice to dress this way because it is comfortable and it’s also not a fashion mishap in my opinion. On occasions as I was growing up I wore suits and ties to church and events such as banquets, meetings, dances, prom, and those occasions happen very frequently now that I am a division 1 college football player. My style of clothing never changed it is basically still the same. I still wear my sweats, sweatshirts, and basketball shorts every where I go and they are still Nike. I feel like my style of dressing will never change until I start to get old and grumpy. My family believed in being clean cut, shaven, and keeping your body in good health as far as hygiene. My family is really religious and they believed that if you cleanse the body your soul will also be cleaner, which is how they communicated their beliefs and values to me and my siblings. My peer community in my opinion believes in dressing really comfortably. I would say since Nike originated in Oregon, people also wear a lot of Nike. I think Nike shoes, basketball shorts, sweats, and sweatshirts are kind of a trend here in Oregon or at least amongst me and my peers. People express their feelings in a lot of ways and some of those ways show in how they dress and carry themselves. Most of the people I meet have a tattoo for example. I think when someone starts a trend it carries on throughout the young community.
